Human rights, well the word says everything about itself. It talks about the minimum rights which a country should offer to its people, people who make that country. I certainly will talk about my own country, India.
Living in a country where majority of people live in dire penury, it sounds so useless to talk about things like right to speak and express oneself with freedom. It sounds a little ridiculous when we think that till date there are thousands of people who don’t get the minimum thing which a human being needs, for example, enough food three times a day, clothes for their back, medicine when they are sick etc etc. Forget about education and awareness of their rights.
While talking about the essence of life, food, which even animals and birds can procure for themselves, first question that comes to mind is, do we suffer from shortage of food grains? answer is no we have piled up food in godowns which are decaying.
Question two, has the government failed to create a proper infrastructure to see the distribution of food grains to the poor, destitutes? Answwer is again No, the infrastructure is perfect but its implementation is almost zero. Those who need it most usually dont get it.
Question three, is the government culprit? That people starve to death or eat grass seeds? Answer again is (hopefully) No, they may be main culprits but what about those people who are paid the salary (a massive salary) to perform these duties? Where is their conscience? They see the suffering of these people directly, yet they don’t perform their duties. They don’t have to take the food from their home, they have to gather it from government godowns and distribute it. After all, that’s what they draw their salaries for.
I have been thinking about these things for a couple of years now, my take on this problem is the common people, these extremely poor people need a thorough awareness about their rights. That the duty is both way, they have duties for the country and the country too have a set of duties for them. That’s what is a must in my eyes. Otherwise they will suffer like this.
The second take brings a sarcastic smile to my lips, forgive me for that, that is these government servants should be taught duties, humanity etc etc. it sounds so ridiculous that an educated person will have to be taught these things so I prefer my first take.
The destitute should stand up for their rights with well meaning people helping them to recognize their rights.
